Pine to Prairie International Birding Trail
Extend your birding experience along the Pine to Prairie International Birding Trail from northwestern Minnesota in the U.S. into southeastern Manitoba. Spend a day’s drive travelling through a range of habitats- from boreal forest to the mixed forest and meadows of aspen-oak parkland, to the grassland of the tall grass and mixed-grass prairies.
Take advantage of the Pine to Prairie Trail to hone in on birding and wildlife viewing sites that welcome the public. Follow the trail to connect these sites in a logical route, with most viewing sites located on or close to the main roadway. Birding hotspots featured along the Pine to Prairie International Birding Trail include Whiteshell Provincial Park, Oak Hammock Marsh, Narcisse Snake Dens, Hecla Provincial Park, and a side trip into Delta Marsh
Manitoba Grasslands Birding Trail
Experience a symphony of rare birds on the Manitoba Grasslands Birding Trail, along with the beauty of the native prairie’s open expanse, big skies, wildflowers and wildlife. Access the best viewing sites for grassland birds in the province on this driving tour in southwestern Manitoba. Hear the rarest of the grassland birds’ sweet songs while watching for a variety of more “western” species including Sharp-tailed Grouse, Ferruginous Hawk, Upland Sandpiper, Marbled Godwit, Burrowing Owl, Willow Flycatcher, Say’s Phoebe, Western Kingbird, Loggerhead Shrike, Horned Lark, Mountain Bluebird, Sprague’s Pipit, Vesper Sparrow, Baird’s Sparrow, Chesnut-collard Longspur, Black-headed Grosbeak, Brewer’s Blackbird, Orchard Oriole and more.
Pick up a driving guide that lays out route directions and stops from most businesses in the nearby towns of Melita or Pierson. Choose from two loops, both of which start from the Gerald W. Malaher Wildlife Management Area. Get the most out of your experience by spending two or more days along the Manitoba Grasslands Birding Trail.
