Churchill and Area
Tucked into the furthest corner of northern Manitoba, Churchill sits on the coast of the historic Hundson Bay. Accessible by rail or air, the Churchill area is celebrated for its outstanding birding opportunities.
Sample Canada’s sub-Arctic landscape and wildlife, including over 250 species of birds that nest or pass through here on their annual migrations. Traverse the sparsely treed tundra, where you may spot 60 to 70 species a day during prime viewing times in May and June.
Scoot from one excellent birdwatching locus to the next in short order. Start with the celebrated Bird Cove, a mere 16 kilometres east of Churchill. Not to be missed is Akudlik Marsh where the Ross’s Gull, perhaps the most sought after species on birders’ lists in Churchill, has nested along with Little Gull in more recent times. Skip over to the Granary Ponds, a favourite feeding place for gulls, terns, shorebirds, and waterfowl. This is a great place to watch for rarities!
